Grey Label Cabernet Shiraz from Langhorne Creek was the first wine ever made by Wolf Blass back in 1967. Consistently from Langhorne Creek, over the years Grey Label has at times been a blend of the two varieties or, more recently, a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. The exceptional quality of Langhorne Creek Shiraz from the 2010 vintage has encouraged us to return to our roots to create a wine which blends Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz to best express the attributes of the region.
Langhorne Creek is one of Australia’s oldest wine growing areas, much of which sits atop an ancient natural floodplain flanked by the Bremer and Angas Rivers on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula. It hosts an abundance of magnificent old gum trees lining the vineyards, believed to contribute to the characteristic regional flavours of eucalypt and mint for which the red wines of the area are so well known. Over the past 150 years, the original vineyards located on the floodplain have traditionally been flood irrigated with waters diverted from the Bremer River through a series of floodgates.
